In the roadside hawthorne top
on a twig between opening leaf wads
a rufus sided towhee throws back it’s head
angles it’s beak wide against gray sky
blasts its musical plastic rattle whistle -
kddrrrreeeee!...kddrrrreeeee!...kddrrrreeee!
