Late Frost

Blackened leaves of false bamboo
dangle limply on their stalks
like gentlemen’s silk pocket squares
hung by their corners to dry.

  1. I can see them... in all their limpness.

  3. I couldn't tell you what species it is. False bamboo is just the common name I've heard locally. It is an invasive weed around here and very hard to eradicate. Last year ours grew at least 12' tall. You can almost sit and watch it grow in the spring! Stalks are jointed appearing from the outside, I don't know if they are sectioned inside like true bamboo. Leaves are often as big as luncheon or even dinner plates. In the seven years we've lived here this patch has easily doubled in area. It's growing around a spring so it always has plenty of moisture. Right now the stalks are about 2 feet tall - and hung with black rags.
