It's just that these abandoned apple trees in the nearby pasture are so twisted and aged looking they remind me of tottery old grandmothers, and yet they still, to the best of their ability, put out blossoms and fruit. The deer are grateful to them and so are the worms! But you are right, this works as a Snow White reference. A bit sinister, that!
